How Reading Time Is Calculated (And Why It Matters)

That "5 min read" label at the top of an article isn't a guess — it's a simple formula. Here's how it works and where it breaks down.

The basic formula

Reading time estimates are built on one number: average silent reading speed, usually set at 200 to 250 words per minute for adult readers of general-audience English text. The calculation is simply:

reading time (minutes) = total word count ÷ words per minute

A 1,000-word article at 200 words per minute comes out to 5 minutes. At 250 words per minute, the same article is 4 minutes. Neither number is "wrong" — they're just different assumptions about reading speed, which is why you'll sometimes see the same article labeled differently on different sites.

Reading time vs. speaking time

Speaking time uses a slower rate, typically 130–150 words per minute, since spoken delivery includes natural pauses that silent reading doesn't. This matters for anyone timing a speech, a podcast script, or a video voiceover — a script that reads in 3 minutes silently will usually take closer to 4–5 minutes to actually deliver out loud.

Reading time labels help readers decide, in advance, whether they have the time and attention for a piece right now — this reduces bounce rate for articles readers do commit to, since they know what they signed up for. Some content teams also use estimated reading time as a planning tool: if research shows readers on a given page tend to stay for about 3 minutes on average, writers aim to keep articles close to that length rather than padding them out.
